Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning for V2X Resource Allocation: Disentangling MARL Challenges Through Benchmarking

arXiv:2603. 06607v2 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: Radio resource allocation (RRA) is a critical function in cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) networks, where vehicles must share limited wireless resources to support safety-critical communications.

Reinforcement Learning-Based Control of CAV Platoon Joining Maneuvers in Mixed Traffic

The paper presents a modeling and simulation framework to study reinforcement‑learning control of connected and automated vehicle (CAV) platoon joining maneuvers in mixed traffic. It evaluates Deep Q‑Network, Double Deep Q‑Network, and Proximal Policy Optimization algorithms, finding that PPO achieves a 98 % joining success rate with less than 1 % collisions by incorporating risk penalties, though it requires more decision steps. An external safety controller can prevent collisions but may reduce joining efficiency, highlighting a trade‑off between safety, effectiveness, and decision speed.

Reinforcement Learning-Based Control of CAV Platoon Joining Maneuvers in Mixed Traffic

The paper presents a modeling and simulation framework to study reinforcement learning (RL) control of connected and automated vehicle (CAV) platoon joining maneuvers in mixed traffic. Using SUMO and agent-based modeling, it evaluates Deep Q-Network (DQN), Double DQN (DDQN), and Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) algorithms, finding that PPO achieves a 98 % joining success rate with less than 1 % collision rate by incorporating risk penalties. The study also shows a trade‑off between safety, joining effectiveness, and decision efficiency, and demonstrates that an external safety controller can prevent collisions but may reduce joining efficiency.

Adaptive Multi-Discriminator WGAN Framework for Resource-Constrained Internet of Vehicles Using Reinforcement Learning and Game Theory

The paper proposes an adaptive multi‑discriminator Wasserstein GAN (MD‑WGAN) framework for Internet of Vehicles (IoV) that combines reinforcement learning and game‑theoretic coordination to manage resource allocation for distributed training. Roadside units host generators with Deep Q‑Network agents that select discriminator subsets and coordinate training epochs, while a unified objective links adversarial quality to resource efficiency, communication overhead, and latency. Experiments on real‑world NGSIM trajectory data show comparable prediction accuracy to state‑of‑the‑art GANs, with a 28% reduction in CPU usage and 6% reduction in memory usage, while maintaining competitive communication overhead and latency.

RideSkill: A Hierarchical Algorithm for Generalized Ride Sharing with LLM-Driven Automatic Evolution

RideSkill is a hierarchical algorithm for generalized ride sharing that uses large language models (LLMs) to automatically design and train a skill repository, a combiner, and a repositioner. The combiner assigns vehicle-specific skills for adaptive dispatch across varying scenarios and objectives, while the repositioner moves idle vehicles to emerging regions to avoid conflicts. By training all components via an LLM-based evolutionary method, RideSkill eliminates the need for real-time LLM calls, enabling high-performance deployment in large-scale systems.

FedPGT: Progressive Gradient Transmission for Vehicular Federated Learning over Time-Varying Channels

FedPGT introduces a progressive gradient transmission scheme for vehicular federated learning over time‑varying channels, where vehicles send high‑magnitude gradient entries according to instantaneous channel conditions. The authors derive a convergence bound showing diminishing returns governed by a power‑law decay, and formulate a stochastic optimization problem that is solved via a Lyapunov drift‑plus‑penalty approach with per‑slot surrogate variables. A low‑complexity resource allocation algorithm is proposed, and experiments on CIFAR‑10 and Argoverse demonstrate a 3.65% accuracy gain and a 12.66% reduction in displacement error compared to state‑of‑the‑art baselines.

QoS-Aware Federated Learning for Multimodal In-Cabin Interaction in Smart Vehicles

The paper introduces FedQoS, an asynchronous federated learning framework designed for multimodal in‑cabin interaction in smart vehicles. It uses a two‑phase gating mechanism: a resource‑aware training gate that starts local learning only when sensing buffers and energy reserves meet safety thresholds, and a QoS‑aware transmission policy that gates uplink updates based on an efficiency score balancing model novelty, latency, and energy costs. Experiments on vehicular datasets show FedQoS achieves competitive personalized accuracy with only marginal loss compared to FedAvg, while reducing communication overhead by 76.7% and latency cost by 26.0%.

Preference-Conditioned Multi-Objective Reinforcement Learning for Tactical Decision Making in Heavy-Duty Vehicles

The paper introduces a preference-conditioned multi-objective reinforcement learning framework for tactical decision making in heavy-duty vehicles. It explicitly models safety, energy efficiency, and time efficiency as separate objectives and uses Generalized Policy Improvement and Proximal Policy Optimization to learn policies that approximate the Pareto front across these conflicting goals. Experiments in a scalable highway traffic simulation show smooth, interpretable Pareto fronts and meaningful trade-offs, with the policy enabling behavior transitions without retraining.
