Twin: Playing an Unknown Game with a Test-Time Digital Twin

arXiv:2608. 14490v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We present a Test-time World-model Inference (Twin) system, in which a frontier coding agent writes an executable world model for completing continual learning tasks, such as ARC-AGI-3 games.

Kepler: Auditable World Models for ARC-AGI-3

Kepler is an open‑source harness that represents hypotheses as executable world models and validates them through retrospective transition checks and conditional prediction checks. In the ARC‑AGI‑3 benchmark, a frozen Claude Opus 5 configuration achieved a perfect 100.00 RHAE on all 25 public games without per‑game model selection or score‑conditioned reruns, and matched or outperformed median‑human action counts on 181 of 183 levels. The study also identified three evaluation failures and highlighted that public‑set score alone has limited discriminative value, advocating for first‑attempt, cost‑conditioned, and verification‑aware reporting. whyItMatters":"The results demonstrate that a purely score‑based evaluation can be misleading, underscoring the need for more rigorous, cost‑aware, and verification‑aware metrics in AI benchmark assessments."

Compiled Agency: Frontier General-Purpose Coding Agents Build Winning Game Players from Bare Interaction - from Flappy Bird to StarCraft II and Civilization

The paper introduces Gauntlet, a framework that lets large language models autonomously build game-playing agents from a bare contract—just a game description, raw observation/action interface, and an empty policy file. In a single session, the model experiments with the game, compiles a standalone controller, and the resulting program is evaluated on held‑out instances without further model calls. The authors demonstrate that these compiled agents can win full‑scale games such as StarCraft II and Civilization, marking the first time a language‑agent system has achieved standalone victory in such complex titles.

Verifiable Hidden Dynamics Play: Generating Agentic RL Environments from Solved Mechanisms

The paper introduces VHD-Play, a pipeline that first samples and solves a mathematical model before generating agentic reinforcement learning environments, ensuring that dynamics and evaluation are aligned from the outset. This approach yields 3,300 diverse environments at a low cost and significantly improves the performance of a large language‑model agent (Qwen3.6‑35B‑A3B) across multiple diagnostic families and external benchmarks. The study demonstrates that stateful interaction is a key factor in learning gains and that scaling the training substrate can further enhance performance.

LLM-BabyBench: Can Language Models Plan in Worlds They Can Simulate?

LLM‑BabyBench transforms the BabyAI gridworld into a fully observable, purely textual setting that isolates planning as the sole source of failure. By serialising the entire grid, providing formal instructions, and validating actions deterministically, the benchmark introduces the PPD suite—Predict, Plan, and Decompose tasks—each scored with metrics that separate mission understanding from sequencing. Across a range of large language models, simulation accuracy is high while planning success drops sharply beyond a model‑specific horizon, revealing that plan length—not grid size—drives failure and that models often commit to a single corridor‑shaped route without backtracking.

AD-WM: Action-Discriminative World Models for Counterfactual Model Predictive Control

AD-WM is a new action‑discriminative joint‑embedding world model designed for counterfactual model predictive control. It augments residual latent dynamics with action‑recovery regularization based on inverse dynamics and conditional mutual information, while discarding auxiliary heads at test time so that MPC remains unchanged. Experiments on OGBench‑Cube and other simulation environments show substantial gains in hard‑start success and mean success, and zero‑shot transfer to a Franka robot improves pick‑and‑place success from 42.2% to 71.1%.

FM-Bench: A Benchmark for Long-Horizon Management with Competing Agents

FM‑Bench is a new benchmark that tests large language model agents on long‑horizon decision making by having them run a football club for 20 in‑game years. The agent must manage a squad, trade players, negotiate contracts, invest in facilities and youth, set lineups, and respond to a board that can fire it, all using 26 tools and roughly 340–400 decision stops, with a deterministic engine producing a final score without human or LLM judges. The benchmark includes a solo track where each of 15 frontier models competes against a frozen scripted world, and an Arena track where the same models plus a scripted anchor share one 20‑year world, allowing the first head‑to‑head evaluation at this scale. whyItMatters":"FM‑Bench provides a rigorous, large‑scale test of sustained, cumulative decision‑making in language‑model agents, revealing that managerial strategy—not computational scale or vendor—drives performance over long horizons."
