Comparative Study of Out-of-the-Box Technology for Automatic Target Detection and Recognition

The paper evaluates out‑of‑the‑box object detection models for automatic target detection and recognition (ATD/R) in military settings. Six YOLO variants and two DETR variants were benchmarked on a new military dataset featuring vehicles, occlusions, and small targets, with performance measured in mAP@0.5 and mAP@0.5:0.95 across air‑to‑ground and ground‑to‑ground perspectives. Findings show larger models and DETR-based approaches perform best, fine‑tuning on the VisDrone dataset improves air‑to‑ground and small‑object performance, yet all models still struggle with small targets in air‑to‑ground scenarios.

ABACUS: Adapting Unified Foundation Model for Bridging Image Count Understanding and Generation

ABACUS is a 3‑billion‑parameter vision‑language model that simultaneously tackles object counting, crowd counting, referring‑expression counting, and count‑faithful image generation. It introduces density‑aware adaptive zooming with an objectness map, a boundary‑aware count policy trained via GRPO to avoid over‑ or under‑counting at crop edges, and a cycle‑consistent GRPO strategy that scores generated images for count accuracy and aesthetic quality without external critics. The model sets new state‑of‑the‑art performance on seven benchmarks, outperforming both specialized and larger generalist models.

VOIM: Training-Free Open-Vocabulary 3D Instance Mapping for RGB-D and Monocular SLAM

VOIM (Voxel‑Grounded Online Instance Manager) is a training‑free system that builds open‑vocabulary 3D instance maps from RGB‑D or monocular RGB input by deferring label and instance decisions until sufficient soft evidence accumulates per voxel across views. Across four perception configurations on ScanNet++, VOIM outperforms the strongest online RGB‑D system, OVO‑SLAM, by 4.8–11.7 mIoU, and achieves 44.07 mIoU under a like‑for‑like protocol, winning all ten scenes. The method also runs unchanged on monocular RGB, matching baseline performance on Replica, and produces exportable occupancy grids that support free‑form instance queries.

Democratising Camera Trap AI: An Open-Source Model for Detecting UK Mammals

Camera traps have become a cornerstone of biodiversity monitoring, but the artificial intelligence that turns vast quantities of images into usable ecological data is often locked behind commercial platforms or trained on fauna that does not match that of the British Isles. In an attempt to remove barriers and increase uptake, we release an open-source object detection model for 31 classes, 28 common UK mammal and bird species, plus utility classes for humans, calibration poles, and vehicles, drawn from a curated dataset of 48,165 labelled instances assembled from multiple sites over a decade of operational deployment through Conservation AI and its successor, Trap Tracker.
