arXiv:2608. 11690v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Continual learning must absorb new tasks without erasing old ones, and replay---mixing a small buffer of past examples into current training---is among the most effective remedies for catastrophic forgetting.

The paper introduces SVC, a parameter‑efficient continual‑learning method for large language models that uses singular‑vector channels as the unit for balancing plasticity and stability. By estimating each channel’s adaptation benefit and forgetting cost from domain‑specific and general‑domain data, SVC selectively updates only the most beneficial channels, employing knee‑based cost screening, Pareto‑front filtering, and Otsu thresholding. Experiments on four LLM families and eight downstream tasks show that SVC preserves pretrained capabilities while achieving strong performance compared to existing PEFT baselines.

arXiv:2606. 01379v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: While prompt-based parameter-efficient continual learning mitigates catastrophic forgetting by isolating task-specific prompts, this isolation also limits later tasks from improving earlier ones, leaving backward knowledge transfer underexplored.

We introduce CMP (Cognitive Memory Primitive), a continual-learning architecture that repre? sents inputs as sparse relational codes, stores them in a two-tier competitive memory, and learns through local updates without end-to-end backpropagation through its feature-generating system.
The paper introduces an algorithmic stability framework to analyze catastrophic forgetting in continual learning using SGD, without assuming a specific model architecture. It decomposes forgetting into intra‑task and cross‑task generalization gaps plus empirical forgetting, and derives bounds for different learning‑rate schedules. Experiments on Split CIFAR‑100 and Split MiniImageNet illustrate the theoretical insights.

We argue that forgetting is not confined to continual learning but is a general optimization phenomenon: during standard training, dominant mini-batch gradients suppress rare but useful update directions, causing short-term forgetting at every step. When such knowledge is never revisited, these losses compound into long-term forgetting-the classical failure mode of continual learning.
