FootsiesGym: A Fighting Game Benchmark for Two-Player Zero-Sum Imperfect-Information Games

We present FootsiesGym, an open-source environment for learning in a non-trivial two-player, zero-sum, imperfect-information game. Built on HiFight's minimalist 2D fighting game Footsies, it isolates the cyclic, non-transitive strategic interactions of fighting game neutral play while remaining simple enough for efficient analysis.

NashDreamer: Model-Based Reinforcement Learning for Zero-Sum Imperfect-Information Games

NashDreamer is a new model-based reinforcement learning framework designed for two-player zero-sum imperfect-information games. It introduces a centralized Multi-Agent Recurrent State-Space Model that separates environment dynamics from player strategy effects, enabling the use of any policy gradient algorithm while preserving convergence guarantees to Nash equilibria. Experiments on four benchmark games show that NashDreamer achieves significantly better sample efficiency than model-free baselines early in training, and the authors analyze its optimization landscape, noting a potential vulnerability to posterior collapse in stochastic settings.

DSLE: A Learning Environment for Dark Souls Boss Encounters

We introduce the Dark Souls Learning Environment (DSLE), a containerized platform that presents all 22 boss encounters of Dark Souls: Remastered as game-playing agent benchmarks through a Gymnasium-style interface. DSLE combines real-time combat, high-dimensional visual input, and sparse terminal rewards, with each environment step being a real action executed against the running game.

LLM-Guided Reinforcement Learning for Adaptive NPC Behavior in Multi-Agent Combat Games

The paper explores a runtime strategy-selection framework where a large language model (LLM) guides a pre‑trained reinforcement learning (RL) policy for non‑player characters (NPCs) in a Unity combat game without altering the underlying policy. Five NPC agents sharing a PPO policy were compared in a baseline setup and an LLM‑augmented setup, where a locally hosted Mistral 7B model assigns one of four tactical tags every five seconds based on live game state. Across 600 episodes against three scripted opponents, the LLM‑augmented agents more than doubled their win rate against a Balanced opponent, improved performance against an Evasive opponent, but struggled against an Aggressive opponent due to over‑reliance on encirclement; analysis of 2,430 strategy selections revealed limited zero‑shot differentiation with the model favoring Surround in 83.8% of cases.

EMAgnet: Parameter-Space EMA Regularization for Policy Gradient Self-Play in Large Games

arXiv:2606. 23995v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Recent work has established that regularized policy gradient methods such as PPO, when used in self-play, can match or exceed specialized game-theoretic algorithms for solving two-player zero-sum imperfect-information games.
