ShadowCast: On-the-Fly Context-Aware Shadow Augmentation for Remote Sensing Image Segmentation

Read the original on arXiv Computer Vision →

ShadowCast is a novel on-the-fly, context-aware shadow augmentation method for remote sensing image segmentation. It synthesizes shadows by extracting masks of elevated objects from segmentation labels and projecting synthetic shadows along an inferred cast-shadow direction, without requiring additional networks or metadata. Experiments on Vaihingen, Potsdam, and LoveDA demonstrate consistent performance gains across various state-of-the-art segmentation architectures and when combined with standard augmentation and regularization techniques.

After a Decade: Bringing Shadow Removal into the Real World with Agentic Training Data

The paper introduces AgenticShadow, a new dataset of 17,138 image‑mask‑target triplets created through an offline agentic workflow that combines physics‑motivated generation, failure detection, feedback‑driven retry, candidate selection, and deterministic correction. This approach addresses the long‑standing lack of diverse paired shadow‑free training data by leveraging existing shadow detection datasets and producing realistic shadow‑free targets. Models trained on AgenticShadow show significant improvements, reducing color distribution differences by 50.5% and cross‑domain LAB RMSE by 19.7‑37.5% compared to prior work.

Consistency as Regularization for Unsupervised Shadow Removal

The paper introduces ShadowCLR, an unsupervised framework for removing shadows from images without requiring paired shadow–shadow-free data or shadow masks. By leveraging consistency across multiple shadowed observations of the same scene, the method regularizes the model to recover scene-consistent appearance while suppressing shadow-specific variations. Experiments on several benchmarks show that ShadowCLR achieves competitive or superior performance compared to existing unsupervised approaches.

Exploring Efficient Open-Vocabulary Segmentation in the Remote Sensing

The paper introduces OVRSISBench, a unified benchmark for open‑vocabulary remote sensing image segmentation, and evaluates existing OVS/OVRSIS models, uncovering their shortcomings in remote sensing contexts. Leveraging insights from this evaluation, the authors propose RSKT‑Seg, a new framework featuring a Multi‑Directional Cost Map Aggregation module, an Efficient Cost Map Fusion transformer, and a Remote Sensing Knowledge Transfer module. Experiments on the benchmark demonstrate that RSKT‑Seg outperforms strong baselines by +3.8 mIoU and +5.9 mACC while achieving twice the inference speed.
