Beyond Pattern Matching in 3D MLLMs: Part-Level Functional Reasoning for Generalizable Recognition

The paper introduces PFIR, a Part-level Functional Inference for Recognition framework that reverses the typical function-as-annotation flow in 3D multimodal large language models (MLLMs). By leveraging PartNeXt segmentation and a curriculum of 507K QA pairs with functional chains of thought, PFIR trains a dual-objective reinforcement learning model (GRPO) to perform strict functional reasoning and descriptive grounding. In zero‑shot tests, PFIR improves accuracy from 60.5% to 66.7%, especially on geometrically ambiguous samples, demonstrating that part‑level functional reasoning enhances generalizable 3D recognition.

Beyond Localization: A Comprehensive Benchmark of Perspective-Conditioned Spatial Reasoning in MLLMs from Omnidirectional Images

The paper introduces PCSR-Bench, a benchmark of 84,373 question‑answer pairs derived from 2,600 omnidirectional images across 26 indoor environments, designed to evaluate perspective‑conditioned spatial reasoning (PCSR) in multimodal large language models (MLLMs). It reports a significant perception–reasoning gap, with accuracy dropping from 57.59% on limited field‑of‑view reasoning to as low as 0.64% on open‑ended compositional directional chains. An RL‑based diagnostic study on a 7B‑scale model shows that reward shaping can improve performance to 60.06% on a controlled task, indicating partial plasticity of PCSR capabilities.

Retrieved Images as Visual Thought: Training-Free Multimodal In-Context Learning for the Open-vs-Closed Gap

ReVisIT is a train‑free framework that turns retrieved image‑label pairs into units of visual thought, combining structured class definitions, multimodal retrieval, and alternating user/assistant injection before joint decoding. On several benchmarks—including Fast Open MiniImageNet, Bongard‑OpenWorld, and the newly released MAAC‑Bench—ReVisIT achieves performance comparable to or surpassing large, trained models while using far fewer parameters. The approach demonstrates that high‑quality retrieval and a simple turns layer can provide a universal performance boost across diverse multimodal tasks.

PRISM-BENCH: Diagnosing Grounded and Faithful Multimodal Reasoning Beyond Final-Answer Accuracy

PRISM-BENCH is a new benchmark comprising 1,000 expert‑curated vision‑language questions across five under‑represented reasoning categories, each paired with an idealized reasoning trace validated by a second annotator. It introduces diagnostics beyond final‑answer accuracy: a perception probe that attributes about 85% of frontier‑model failures to misperception, and trace alignment that predicts answer correctness with a macro AUROC of 0.66. The benchmark also presents CORE, an efficiency‑aware metric that reorders 24.2% of model pairs relative to accuracy while remaining uncorrelated with response length, revealing that recent gains are driven by recognition rather than spatial grounding.

Think-Capture: Active 3D Geometry Acquisition for Spatial Reasoning in Vision-Language Models

Think-Capture is a query‑conditioned framework that selectively acquires 3D geometry for task‑critical objects to improve spatial reasoning in Vision‑Language Models. It uses a 3D toolkit to lift zero‑shot masks into a common coordinate frame, a Symbolic 3D State Abstraction to encode object and camera states as structured text, and Hierarchical Group Relative Policy Optimization to train the VLM on when geometry helps or misleads. The resulting Think‑Capture‑4B model achieves significant gains on MindCube‑Tiny, MMSI‑Bench, and ViewSpatial benchmarks while remaining robust to perturbations and fitting on a single 24 GB GPU.

Adversarially Robust Abductive Fusion of Pre-trained Transformer-based Perception Models

arXiv:2608. 04190v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Deploying pre-trained perception models in novel environments degrades their accuracy under distributional shift, and assembling them alone does not recover it: combiners such as majority voting trade recall for precision and are brittle to coordinated failures.
