Zero-shot learning (ZSL) for inertial measurement unit (IMU)-based human activity recognition (HAR) faces a central challenge: bridging the gap between sensor embeddings and semantic class representations. We systematically evaluate seven configurations combining three inference methods with two training pipelines on the PAMAP2 dataset, using 14 seen and 4 unseen activity classes with subjects 108 and 109 held out for testing.

The paper introduces HML-FSAR, a hierarchical metric learning framework for few-shot action recognition. It incorporates a spatial‑enhanced module, temporal MHA, heterogeneous alignment, spatial‑temporal fusion, and dictionary learning to build a comprehensive feature pipeline. Progressive constraints—center, alignment, contrastive, dictionary, and prototype metrics—are applied from frame‑level representations to final prototypes, improving feature compactness, alignment, discriminability, and robustness.

The paper explores training a large language model solely on textual video descriptions to perform zero‑shot video temporal localization, eliminating the need for paired video‑text data during training. Using a 134K‑example corpus and adapting Qwen3‑8B with LoRA on CLIP or LLM2CLIP embeddings, the authors evaluate on Charades‑STA and QV‑Highlights, achieving modest performance when directly replacing text with frame embeddings. They introduce Nearest Entity Replacement (NER), a training‑free mapping that represents each video frame by the mean of its nearest text‑entity embeddings, which significantly improves results and narrows the modality gap.

ChronoSteer is a decoupled agentic framework that bridges large language models and time series foundation models by learning cross‑modal alignment from synthetic paired supervision. It converts textual events into revision instructions that steer a frozen time‑series model, discretizes these instructions into a compact codebook to reduce semantic divergence, and then refines the predictions with a two‑stage training strategy. The authors also release a leakage‑controlled multimodal benchmark and report a 25.8% improvement in zero‑shot prediction accuracy over the unimodal backbone.
