Domain generalization and synthetic data in object detection: the enabler, the probe, and the gap

The paper reviews domain generalization (DG) for object detection, highlighting its scarcity and unique challenges such as localization and multi-scale representation. It examines synthetic data from three angles: as an enabler that diversifies and aligns training data, as a probe that allows controlled experiments to uncover failure modes, and as a source of a synthetic‑to‑real gap that hampers deployment on real imagery. The authors conclude that future DG research must develop representation‑aware methods that explicitly address both localization and classification under domain shift.

Rethinking Pre-Training and Augmentation for Zero-Shot Cross-City Object Detection

The paper proposes a modular training pipeline for zero‑shot cross‑city object detection that combines a multi‑dataset pre‑training strategy with class‑agnostic objectness distillation and a domain‑resilient augmentation stream featuring a Grayworld transformation. Applied to the RF‑DETR detector, the approach reduces cross‑city distribution gaps while using only 16 GB GPU memory, achieving a 24.29‑point mAP improvement and 1st place on the AI City Challenge Track 6 leaderboard. The authors provide code and data at the referenced GitHub repository.

Domain Adaptation with a Single Vision-Language Embedding

arXiv:2410. 21361v2 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: Domain adaptation has been extensively investigated in computer vision but still requires access to target data at the training time, which might be difficult to obtain in real-world autonomous driving scenarios, especially under rare or adverse conditions.

MAETrack: Unleashing the Potential of Pretrained Geometric Priors for 3D Single Object Tracking

MAETrack introduces a lightweight framework to adapt pretrained masked autoencoder (MAE) representations for 3D single object tracking (SOT). It uses Layer‑Selective Initialization (LSI) to keep shallow geometric layers from the pre‑training while re‑initializing deeper layers, and Geometric Residual Gating (GRG) to emphasize salient regions in BEV features before template‑search fusion. Experiments on standard 3D SOT benchmarks show consistent improvements over vanilla fine‑tuning with minimal computational cost.

Learning Features, Not Layouts: Feature-Axis Attention as a Transfer Prior for Medical Imaging

The paper introduces FAD‑ViT, a vision transformer that decouples spatial and feature axes of global attention, making feature‑axis attention the primary operator. Experiments on 23 medical imaging tasks show that shifting global attention from spatial to feature leaves from‑scratch performance unchanged but significantly boosts transfer learning, achieving up to three times the gain with fewer parameters and lower compute. The study demonstrates that prioritizing feature‑axis attention is a simple, cost‑effective design choice for improving medical image transfer.
