Adapting English Quality Classifiers for Multilingual LLM Pretraining Data Selection

The paper proposes a multilingual adaptation of an English quality classifier to select high‑quality training data for large language model pretraining across more than 100 languages. The method trains a small multi‑layer perceptron on Transformer embeddings, using machine‑translated text scored by the English classifier as labels. Experiments on 1B, 3B, and 8B parameter models show that the adapted classifier preserves benchmark performance and regional knowledge, and it generalizes to unseen languages by learning the original scoring criteria.

Beyond the Final Layer: Intermediate Representations for Better Multilingual Calibration in Large Language Models

The paper investigates multilingual confidence calibration in large language models, revealing that non‑English languages are systematically less well calibrated than English. By analyzing internal representations, the authors find that late‑intermediate layers provide a more reliable confidence signal than the final layer, which is biased by English‑centric training. They propose training‑free methods such as Language‑Aware Confidence Ensemble (LACE) to adaptively select optimal layers per language, aiming to improve global equity and trustworthiness of LLMs.

A Cost-Efficient Routing Pipeline for Multilingual Short-Text Classification Using Small Language Models

arXiv:2608. 10939v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Multilingual short-text classification supports operational systems such as content moderation, customer support routing, and intent recognition, yet aggregate evaluation often hides large differences between high-resource and low-resource languages.
