Quadratic Characterizations for Reachability Analysis of Neural Networks

The paper introduces a framework for constructing verified quadratic characterizations of scalar relations in two-dimensional space, using convex quadratic programs and sum-of-squares certificates to generate locally valid inequalities that are globally verified. These constraints provide sound overapproximations compatible with existing QC and IQC analysis tools, and can be embedded in semidefinite programs for reachability and safety analysis of feedforward neural networks. The method improves reachability results for smooth activations like tanh, reduces conservatism for ReLU networks by exploiting neuron dependencies, and extends beyond neural networks to other nonlinear systems such as saturation.

L-Lipschitz Gershgorin ResNet Network

The paper introduces a method for constructing L-Lipschitz deep residual networks (ResNets) using a Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) framework. By reformulating the ResNet architecture as a pseudo-tridiagonal LMI and applying the Gershgorin circle theorem, the authors derive closed‑form constraints on network parameters that guarantee Lipschitz continuity. The work also presents a compositional framework for handling recursive systems in hierarchical architectures, while noting that the Gershgorin-based approximations can over‑constrain the system, reducing expressive capacity.

The Geometry of Limits in ReLU Function Spaces

The paper investigates the geometry and closure properties of function spaces realized by ReLU neural networks with fixed architecture. It proves that the minimal number of convex pieces in continuous piecewise-linear functions is lower semicontinuous under pointwise convergence, and uses this to show that shallow scalar ReLU realization spaces are closed in the weighted supremum norm, while providing a counterexample that demonstrates non-closedness for a specific architecture. The work also characterizes the role of a blow‑up residue in non‑closedness and offers new geometric and functional‑analytic tools for analyzing ReLU realization spaces.
