GeoBiaset: A Counterfactual Benchmark for Demographic Bias in World-Level Geolocalization

Read the original on arXiv Computer Vision →

GeoBiaset is a new benchmark that tests how world-level image geolocalization models react to the apparent race of a person inserted into the image foreground. The dataset contains 9,541 images, each paired with counterfactual edits across seven races while keeping the background and ground-truth coordinates unchanged. Experiments show that demographic perturbations can cause a 16–47% drop in continent-level accuracy, and that models shift their focus from geographic landmarks to facial features when landmarks are absent.

Anthropogenic Regional Adaptation in Multimodal Vision-Language Model

The paper introduces Anthropogenic Regional Adaptation, a new framework for aligning vision‑language models with specific regional contexts while preserving global performance. It proposes the GG‑EZ method, which filters regional data and merges models to achieve this alignment. Experiments on three VL architectures and a Southeast Asia case study show 5‑15% improvements in cultural relevance metrics with over 98% retention of global performance.

GGSS: Geodesic-Gated Spherical Steering for Inference-Time Debiasing of Generative Vision-Language Models

The paper introduces GGSS (Geodesic‑Gated Spherical Steering), a norm‑preserving method for inference‑time debiasing of generative vision‑language models. GGSS identifies a counterfactual bias subspace on the unit hypersphere, steers visual tokens along geodesic arcs, and applies an adaptive gate to target tokens with strong demographic signals. Experiments on four generative VLMs show that GGSS achieves the lowest average bias across multiple tests while maintaining visual‑language performance within ±0.6 pp of the baseline.
