DocAttriBench (DAB) is a large‑scale benchmark for fine‑grained, element‑level source attribution in Document Visual Question Answering (VQA). It introduces MAPPET, a Mask‑based Perplexity‑Derived Attribution method that uses document layout and language modeling to identify the most informative layout element for each answer. The benchmark contains 237k documents and 296k question‑answer pairs with element‑level grounding, and it evaluates multimodal LLMs on answer accuracy, attribution accuracy, and overall answer quality, revealing that even strong models often fail to localize supporting elements.

SAGE is a multi‑agent framework that transforms Chinese ancient document understanding from direct answer generation into evidence‑grounded inference. It orchestrates specialized agents for planning, evidence acquisition, claim verification, and bounded replanning within a shared‑state runtime, enabling evidence seeking, answer revision, and abstention when grounding is lacking. Experiments on the AncientDoc benchmark show that SAGE outperforms direct‑answering baselines across three LVLM backbones, and even a 9B‑parameter Qwen3.5 model surpasses larger monolithic LVLMs, underscoring the value of structured, evidence‑grounded inference over mere model scaling.

NoteVQA is a new benchmark that collects 252 real‑life visual questions from the Chinese image‑sharing platform Xiaohongshu, covering 12 topics and 7 user intents. Each question is paired with a concise expert reference and a human‑audited interleaved answer that blends text and visual evidence. The study evaluates VLMs on short‑answer correctness and interleaved answer quality using a new AgenticInterleave framework and a 12‑dimensional IVR‑12 rubric, finding that even state‑of‑the‑art models achieve only about 53% accuracy and lag behind human references in content quality.

DocPilot is an agentic framework for long visual document understanding that orchestrates evidence seeking through page-level navigation and fine-grained localization, integrating visual inspection, code-based numerical reasoning, and cross-modal reasoning. It employs curriculum-based agentic training to enable small language models to learn complex document solving, progressing from single-ability learning to adaptive orchestration. Experiments on benchmarks such as MMLongBench-Doc, DocBench, FinRAGBench-V, and MADQA show that DocPilot achieves strong gains with frontier VLM backbones, and its 4B variant competes with much larger models, demonstrating effectiveness and generalization across diverse long-document reasoning tasks.

arXiv:2606. 16092v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Real-world documents combine text with tables, charts, photographs, and diagrams arranged in diverse layouts, yet existing research on multimodal large language models (MLLMs) for document QA predominantly produces text-only responses, underutilizing these visual elements.
