Frontier vision-language models have overtaken young adults at detecting AI-generated portraits -- but not their calibration

arXiv:2608.30210v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: AI image generators now create face portraits that are hard to tell from real photographs. Vision-language models (VLMs) are increasingly proposed to...

EXPL-FR: Explaining Face Recognition Models via Vision-Language Alignment

EXPL-FR is a lightweight adapter that aligns a vision‑language model’s image encoder with a frozen face‑recognition (FR) embedding space, enabling the FR model to be explained using semantic attribute prompts without any text training. By mapping 978 attribute prompts across 22 categories into the FR space, the method identifies the most detectable concepts—forming a readable semantic signature that better separates identities than the full vocabulary. The approach is evaluated on four FR backbones and two VLM encoders, providing identity‑level, per‑image, and differential explanations, and demonstrates that prompt‑driven audits can rank FR models by per‑ethnicity error and attribute‑change verification cost without requiring labeled data.

DataComp-VLM: Improved Open Datasets for Vision-Language Models

arXiv:2606. 28551v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Building performant Vision-Language Models (VLMs) requires carefully curating large-scale training datasets, yet the community lacks systematic benchmarks for evaluating such curation strategies.

FOCUS: Benchmarking Retinal Model Generalization from Foundation Vision Encoders to Multimodal LLMs

The paper introduces FOCUS, a cross‑dataset benchmark for retinal fundus models that evaluates vision‑only encoders, vision‑language dual encoders, and multimodal large language models across ten public datasets. It measures ranking performance, calibration, subgroup disparities, and image‑quality robustness for tasks such as diabetic retinopathy and glaucomatous optic neuropathy. Results show no single model family dominates, with vision‑only encoders ranking highest on average, while fine‑tuning improves in‑domain performance but varies in external transfer.

The Percept-V Challenge: Can Multimodal LLMs Crack Simple Perception Problems?

The paper introduces Percept-V, a dataset of 6,000 program-generated images across 30 domains designed to test simple visual perception skills from the TVPS-4 framework. Experiments show that state‑of‑the‑art multimodal large language models perform poorly compared to humans, especially as image complexity increases, and that fine‑tuning yields only limited generalization to related datasets. The study highlights specific perception skills that remain challenging for current models.

From GAN-Based Models to GPT-5: A Taxonomy-Guided Study of Human Performance in Detecting Deepfake Face Images

The paper introduces the Deepfake Face Artifact Taxonomy (DFAT) and uses it to create both general-purpose and model-specific training materials for detecting deepfake face images. An online experiment with 524 participants tested detection accuracy across five generative models—three GANs, one diffusion model, and one multimodal large language model (GPT‑5)—showing that detection performance varies strongly by model and that model‑specific training yields greater gains than general training. A five‑month follow‑up with 342 participants revealed stable detection accuracy and no increase in perceived stress, suggesting the training’s durability.
