Artificial Intelligence Algorithms for the Detection of Pathologies Related to Lung Cancer through Image Analysis using Convolutional Neural Networks and Data Augmentation: a systematic mapping of the literature

The article reviews recent applications of artificial intelligence and deep learning, particularly convolutional neural networks with transfer learning and data augmentation, for detecting lung cancer in medical images. It surveys 96 studies from 2015 onward, highlighting high sensitivity and specificity achieved by these methods. The authors also identify challenges such as data standardization, model explainability, patient privacy, and ethical concerns that must be addressed before clinical deployment.

A Comprehensive Comparison of Deep Learning Architectures for COVID-19 Classification on CT & X-ray Imagery

The article presents a comparative study of convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures for classifying COVID-19 from healthy lung images using CT and X‑ray scans. Multiple pre‑trained models—including VGG, DenseNet, ResNet, MobileNet, Xception, Inception, EfficientNet, and NasNet—were evaluated on two X‑ray and two CT datasets. ResNet and VGG achieved the highest accuracies, ranging from 95% to 98%, outperforming previous reports in the literature.

A Lightweight CNN Integrated Compact Convolutional Transformer for Multi-Scale Feature Learning and reducing computational complexity for breast cancer mammography image detection and classification

The paper presents a lightweight CNN‑integrated Compact Convolutional Transformer (CCT) designed for multi‑scale feature learning in breast cancer mammography. With only 250,435 parameters, the model achieved 99‑100% accuracy across three datasets using 5‑fold cross‑validation, demonstrating robust generalization. Explainable AI components were added to clarify the classification process, aiming to increase clinical trust in resource‑constrained settings.

Comprehensive framework for evaluation of deep neural networks in detection and quantification of lymphoma from PET/CT images: clinical insights, pitfalls, and observer agreement analyses

This study presents a clinically relevant framework for evaluating deep neural networks that segment lymphoma lesions in PET/CT images, addressing gaps such as out‑of‑distribution testing and comparison with expert annotators. Using 611 multi‑institutional cases, the authors assess four networks (ResUNet, SegResNet, DynUNet, SwinUNETR) with lesion‑specific metrics, detection criteria, and metabolic‑characteristic‑based thresholds, finding that models perform best on large, intense lesions. The work also demonstrates that network errors mirror those of physicians, highlighting shared challenges with small, faint lesions.

A Comparative Evaluation of Pre-trained Convolutional Neural Networks for Melanoma Detection

The study compares five pre‑trained convolutional neural networks—ResNet50, VGG16, VGG19, MobileNet, and InceptionV3—for melanoma detection using dermatoscopic and histopathological image datasets. Accuracy varied across models and modalities, with ResNet50 achieving the highest scores (84% on HAM10000 and 83% on CR‑AI4SkIN) and InceptionV3 the lowest (71% on ISIC 2018). The results show that a model’s performance on dermatoscopic images does not necessarily predict its performance on histopathological images.

Less Contouring, More Accuracy: Lesion-Guided ROI Deep Learning for Ovarian Ultrasound Classification

The study evaluates lesion‑guided region‑of‑interest (ROI) deep learning for ovarian ultrasound classification, comparing it to global image, lesion contour, and contour‑based radiomics approaches across two public datasets. Using four deep‑learning architectures, the lesion‑guided ROI strategy achieved the highest accuracy (93.10% on MMOTU and 97.56% on OUD) with an AUC of 0.99, while requiring less annotation effort than contour‑based methods.
