When Users Don't Ask: Benchmarking Context-Driven Memory Retrieval in Conversational Agents

The paper introduces LOCOMO-CONV, a conversational memory benchmark that expands on the existing LoCoMo dataset with four query styles—dialog, implicit, counterfactual, and composed—designed to evaluate memory systems in realistic conversational settings. Experiments across five memory systems reveal that conversational framing uncovers significant retrieval gaps missed by traditional QA benchmarks, particularly for implicit and composed queries, and that strong retrieval does not necessarily translate into higher response quality. The study also highlights silent grounding in implicit queries, where memory enhances contextual grounding without explicitly presenting the gold fact, suggesting a need for reasoning-based memory elaboration.

Test-Time Memory Construction

The paper introduces T$^2$Mem, a Test-Time Memory construction framework that defers memory building to inference, allowing large language models to adaptively retrieve and organize episode-level metadata and raw interactions during reasoning. By extracting lightweight metadata offline and progressively constructing query-specific memory at test time, T$^2$Mem reduces overhead and improves performance on long-horizon tasks. Experiments on LoCoMo and LongMemEval demonstrate consistent gains over strong baselines across various backbone LLMs.

UTILMEM: Benchmarking Evidence Utilization in Long-Term Conversational Memory

UTILMEM is a new diagnostic benchmark that tests how conversational agents use long‑term memory, focusing on reasoning over dense histories, spotting implicitly relevant memories, synthesizing distributed evidence, and resisting interference from similar distractors. It contains 1,717 instances across five domains and evaluates a range of retrieval‑based and memory‑augmented systems. The study shows that strong performance on traditional factual recall does not guarantee effective memory utilization, highlighting a gap between retrieving information and integrating it into coherent, task‑oriented outputs.

From Retrieval to Reconstruction: Constructing Evolvable Cognitive Memory for Long-Term Dialogue

The paper introduces CogMem, a cognitive memory architecture for long‑term dialogue agents that uses a PEC$^2$F graph schema to separate claims, facts, and events. Dialogue turns are incrementally turned into provenance‑aware graph records, consolidated into higher‑level facts, and reconciled into temporally scoped claim views when conflicting updates arise. Retrieval is performed by a rule‑based controller that applies deterministic graph operators—anchoring, traversal, intersection, and evidence grounding—guided by LLM intent parsing, achieving strong performance on multi‑hop, temporal, and knowledge‑update tasks in LoCoMo and LongMemEval benchmarks.

Memorilla: Latent Semantic Memory for LLMs

Memorilla is a memory system that encodes an entire document collection into reusable embeddings and retrieves query‑specific information as a fixed set of memory tokens for a frozen large language model. Using only 16 memory tokens, it outperforms baselines such as Mem0 and MemoRAG on most benchmarks, achieving higher accuracy on FactKG while drastically reducing token usage. In agentic settings, Memorilla helps prevent wandering and boosts success rates in a TextWorld environment, demonstrating its utility for continual learning and long‑context interactions.

MemFit: Efficient Long-Term Agentic Memory

MemFit is a long‑term memory system designed for conversational agents that stores each dialogue turn verbatim in an append‑only store, enabling near‑instantaneous, LLM‑free insertion. It indexes turns using segment summaries and employs an LLM‑free, multi‑path retrieval strategy that blends lexical and semantic signals with cross‑encoder reranking over caption‑augmented episodes. Experiments on LoCoMo, MemGallery, and LongMemEval‑S demonstrate state‑of‑the‑art performance while drastically reducing memory construction time and cost.
