SteerablePlex: Can We Steer Full-Duplex Models?

Read the original on arXiv Computation and Language →

The paper introduces SimIF-Bench, a benchmark that tests whether full‑duplex conversational models can stay within a prescribed scenario and complete multiple goals in order. It shows that current open‑source models struggle with these constraints. The authors then propose a GDPO‑based training recipe that allows a full‑duplex model, named SteerablePlex, to follow textual instructions during conversation while preserving turn‑taking, and demonstrate that it outperforms existing open‑source models and GPT‑Realtime when used as a controllable user simulator.

SteerDuplex: Steerable Duplex Speech Dialogue Models

SteerDuplex is a full‑duplex speech dialogue model that can be steered along attributes such as tone, persona, speaking rate, and voice style in response to user instructions. The authors introduce a taxonomy of text‑ and audio‑based steerability, identify gaps in existing models, and fine‑tune a Moshi‑based model with reinforcement learning to improve timing and response continuity. They also present SteerBench, a benchmark of 390 spoken prompts and 1,067 human‑authored rubrics, showing significant gains in audio‑steering pass rates and interruption handling compared to open baselines.

A frontend-backend architecture for tool calls in full-duplex speech models

The paper introduces a frontend‑backend architecture for full‑duplex speech‑to‑speech models that enables tool calls while preserving natural conversational flow. The frontend emits a delegation token and streams ASR transcripts to a text‑based backend LLM, which performs tool calls and returns results that are re‑injected into the frontend via a lightweight prefill‑and‑repeat mechanism before streaming TTS synthesis. In single‑turn evaluations the system achieves 92‑97% tool‑call recall, 81.2% accuracy in rejecting irrelevant calls, and competitive performance on Full‑Duplex‑Bench‑V3 and EVA‑Bench when paired with a large backend model.

Instruct-FD: Can Your Full-Duplex Speech System Follow Turn-Taking Instructions?

arXiv:2607. 20460v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Current full-duplex (FD) spoken dialogue systems can produce fluid interactions, yet it remains unclear whether they can adapt their turn-taking behavior when explicitly instructed.

Decoupling Turn-Taking from Semantics: A Decoupled Data Approach for Finite-State-Machine-Based Full-Duplex Dialogue

The paper introduces a decoupled data approach for the Neural Finite State Machine (NFSM) framework to improve full‑duplex dialogue. It serializes real human‑human spoken dialogues into FSM tapes using a rule‑based event‑guided transformation, while shaping semantics through human‑agent text dialogues. A Source‑Aware Calibrated (SAC) loss is proposed to balance state‑transition token distribution and align each data source with its strongest supervisory signal, leading to better turn‑taking performance without sacrificing semantic quality.
