Methodological and Conceptual Framework for 5D Multi-Table Analysis: A Unified Approach for Complex Data Reuse

The paper introduces the Relational Hypergraph Transformer (RHT), a unified architecture that models relational databases as hypergraphs and learns pentadimensional embeddings (PentE). RHT applies sparse relational attention whose complexity scales with the average relational degree, making it computationally efficient for large, high‑dimensional, and high‑cardinality datasets. Experiments on the Synthea synthetic electronic health record dataset show that RHT produces more semantically coherent embeddings than tabular, relational, and temporal graph baselines, while remaining scalable, and the authors provide an open‑source implementation and plan clinical validation on MIMIC‑IV.

Rethinking How We Evaluate Methodological Progress in Health AI

The study re‑implements 12 AI algorithms for electronic health records within a unified framework and evaluates them on MIMIC‑IV and NWICU datasets. It compares expert‑authored clinically meaningful tasks with randomly generated tasks, finding that pairwise algorithm comparisons transfer well across task families and datasets, yet clinically meaningful tasks show stronger task‑method interactions. The results also reveal that newer algorithms do not consistently outperform older ones, with gradient‑boosted trees remaining highly competitive when combined with modern EHR representations.

SMILE: Self-Explainable Multimodal Information Bottleneck for Medical Diagnosis

The paper introduces SMILE, a self‑explainable multimodal information bottleneck framework for medical diagnosis. It jointly optimizes predictive accuracy and modality‑specific explainability by selecting the most informative elements within each data modality. Experiments on diverse medical datasets show strong diagnostic performance, including a 9.1‑percentage‑point accuracy gain on the iCTCF dataset, and provide transparent, modality‑aware explanations that enhance both explainability and generalization.
