KULTURE Bench: A Benchmark for Assessing Language Model in Korean Cultural Context

Read the original on arXiv AI →

KULTURE Bench is a new evaluation framework created to assess language models within the Korean cultural context. It includes datasets of cultural news, idioms, and poetry and tests models at word, sentence, and paragraph levels for cultural comprehension and reasoning. Experiments with models trained on different corpora show that current models still lack deep understanding of Korean cultural texts.

KBS: A Korean Benchmark Suite for Foundation Model Evaluation

The paper introduces KBS, a Korean Benchmark Suite that includes six datasets—Ko-ARC, Ko-GSM8K, Ko-EQ-Bench, Ko-WinoGrande, Ko-LAMBADA, and Ko-IFEval—covering nine capabilities across 9,396 items. It emphasizes a non‑translation approach by reviewing, localizing, and redesigning tasks for Korean, and evaluates Korean‑developed, multilingual open, and closed API models under protocols that consider model access, prompt format, and scoring differences. The results highlight that Korean benchmark scores are influenced by task construction, scoring rules, prompting, and post‑training, suggesting that evaluations should report both final scores and the settings used.

Camellia: Benchmarking Cultural Biases in LLMs for Asian Languages

Camellia is a new benchmark that tests cultural bias in large language models (LLMs) across nine Asian languages and six Asian cultures. It contains 19,530 manually annotated entities linked to Asian or Western cultures and 2,173 masked social‑media contexts for these entities. Using Camellia, the authors evaluate four multilingual LLMs on cultural context adaptation, sentiment association, and entity extractive QA, finding that models struggle with cultural adaptation, exhibit differing biases across regions and families, and have difficulty understanding context in some Asian languages.

KoNeoBench: A Curated Evaluation Dataset for LLM Understanding of Korean Neologisms

KoNeoBench is a curated dataset designed to evaluate large language models’ understanding of Korean neologisms. It contains 1,785 recently attested Korean words from online news since 2020, each accompanied by usage examples, word‑formation analyses, and dictionary‑style definitions. The authors define four evaluation tasks, report results from recent models and a human baseline, and find that current LLMs struggle with recovering source components, distinguishing semantic categories, and generating accurate definitions.
