RL-Index: Reinforcement Learning for Retrieval Index Reasoning

arXiv:2606. 16316v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Retrieving external knowledge is essential for solving real-world tasks, yet it remains challenging when the relationship between a query and its relevant knowledge involves implicit and complex reasoning beyond surface-level semantic or lexical matching (e.

What Should an Agent Forget? Separating What Is Stored from What Is Used

The paper introduces RD-Forget, a training‑free framework that separates what a persistent language agent stores from what it uses at answer time. It keeps a source archive of all observations while a query‑conditioned memory view filters evidence relevant to the current question, using a frozen language‑model curator to group facts into semantic slots and preserve multi‑hop relations. The approach employs rate‑distortion principles to stay within a memory budget and demonstrates improvements across conversational memory, knowledge updating, fact consolidation, long‑context reasoning, and personalization tasks.

Librarian Agents: Training LLMs to Curate Long-Context Workspaces that Anticipate Future Queries

The paper introduces Librarian Agents, a framework that trains large language models to proactively curate long-context workspaces by reorganizing raw documents into a hierarchical filesystem of synthetic files and reference links. This builder agent, optimized via reinforcement learning, aims to maximize downstream answering accuracy by anticipating future queries rather than reacting to them. Experiments show that Librarian Agents outperform leading retrieval and precomputation methods, achieving a 33‑point accuracy gain on BrowseComp‑Plus and a 31‑point improvement on BRIGHT in zero‑shot settings.
