BudgetPix: Compute-Adaptive Tokenization for Pixel-Space Image Diffusion

Read the original on arXiv Computer Vision →

BudgetPix introduces a compute‑adaptive tokenization framework for pixel‑space image diffusion, dynamically allocating computational resources based on visual complexity and spatial layout. It comprises an adaptive encoder using an entropy‑guided quadtree and multi‑scale patch embedder, a scale‑aware decoder, and a flexible training schedule that allows pixel‑space denoisers to operate across variable token counts. The method integrates with existing diffusion architectures, achieving comparable fidelity to larger models while using only a fraction of the compute budget, and demonstrates improved quality‑efficiency tradeoffs in both text‑to‑image and class‑conditional generation.

Selective Amortization of Full-Budget Counterfactual Reasoning for Visual Token Communication

The paper introduces ACV-Gate, an adaptive framework for generative image communication that selectively evaluates candidate semantic tokens to reduce encoder computation while maintaining reconstruction quality. ACV-Gate uses a set-aware student model trained on terminal advantages and regrets to rank tokens, and a selective refinement mechanism that limits exact evaluations to a bounded candidate set, controlled by cost-based thresholds. Experiments on CIFAR-10, STL-10, and 384×384 images show that ACV-Gate improves PSNR by up to 0.636 dB at 0.20 bpp and reduces candidate evaluations to about 27.6% of the exact-full method.

LUMI: Tokenizer-Agnostic LLM-Based Lossless Image Compression

Large language model (LLM)-based lossless image compression methods typically represent pixel data through the native text interface of a pretrained model, converting pixel values into token sequences that the LLM processes through its vocabulary head. This design shows that pretrained language models can provide probability estimates for image coding, but it also couples compression to tokenizer behavior, vocabulary-specific numeric tokens, and model-family-specific adaptation.
