The paper presents an evolutionary framework, EXAQC, that automatically discovers parameterized quantum circuits (PQCs) for use as intermediate modules in hybrid quantum‑classical neural networks for image classification. By evolving PQCs while keeping classical feature‑extraction and prediction layers fixed, the authors achieve high accuracies on MNIST, Fashion‑MNIST, and CIFAR‑10 with gate counts comparable to other quantum architecture‑search methods. The evolved hybrid models match or exceed the performance of classical networks while using far fewer trainable parameters, and the choice of encoding (rotation‑based vs amplitude) significantly impacts accuracy.

The paper identifies a representational limitation of amplitude encoding in quantum neural networks: normalization makes the encoding invariant to nonzero real rescaling of inputs, which restricts the hypothesis class regardless of the circuit architecture. The authors derive a condition for deterministic preprocessing that removes this ambiguity and propose a fixed nonlinear feature map that distinguishes all real inputs while keeping logarithmic qubit scaling. Experiments on three classification benchmarks and a synthetic dataset show that this new encoding improves accuracy by 21–44 % over both conventional amplitude and angle encodings and a classical neural network.

We propose a method to optimize the correlation among convolutional neural network (CNN) features that are used as inputs to quantum neural network (QNN) to enhance image classification accuracy. Unlike prior approaches that employ orthogonal decomposition as preprocessing, we intentionally introduce correlated features that are more physically compatible with QNN.

QiT is a Quantum‑Inspired Transformer designed for visual recognition tasks. It replaces quantum neural network concepts with scalable classical operations: angle‑inspired encoding of image tokens, self‑attention over periodic features approximating quantum fidelity kernels, and gated multiplicative emulation of variational circuit interactions. The model achieves competitive performance on image‑classification benchmarks, matching a classical Transformer while avoiding the high runtime costs of simulated quantum models.

The paper introduces Neural Fourier Surrogates (NFS), a stochastic classical neural network that learns coefficients over a finite Fourier series support similar to quantum neural networks (QNNs). By testing on tabular benchmark datasets, NFS demonstrates competitive classification performance against established classical baselines and data‑reuploading QNNs. The authors also compare the learned Fourier spectra of QNNs and NFS on synthetic data, positioning NFS as a natural classical baseline for evaluating QNN performance.
