A Joint Finite-Sample Certificate for Adaptive Selective Conformal Risk Control

arXiv:2606. 08517v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Selective predictors answer on confident inputs and abstain elsewhere; deploying one safely needs a single finite-sample certificate that simultaneously upper-bounds the selected risk, lower-bounds the acceptance probability $\pacc$ above a floor $\pmin$, and lower-bounds the deployment utility.

Dense Weak Hiding: Closing Complexity Gaps in Nonconvex and PL Finite-Sum Optimization under Individual Smoothness

The paper establishes the optimal incremental first‑order oracle (IFO) complexity for nonconvex finite‑sum optimization under individual smoothness, proving a matching lower bound that closes a previously missing √{n} factor. It also refines the analysis of the PAGE algorithm under the global Polyak‑Lojasiewicz condition, providing tighter guarantees for different ranges of the condition number. The authors introduce a novel dense weak hiding construction that yields these lower bounds and demonstrates the limits of existing methods.

D-SLR: The Disjoint Row-Sparse plus Low-Rank Decomposition

The paper introduces D‑SLR, a closed‑form decomposition that combines a low‑rank approximation with a disjoint row‑sparse component, offering a drop‑in replacement for truncated SVD. Unlike previous joint methods, D‑SLR restricts each row to either be stored verbatim or approximated by the low‑rank fit, achieving the joint optimum without extra parameters and without iterative solvers or regularization tuning. The authors provide an assumption‑free, a‑posteriori error bound for every shape, and demonstrate performance gains on synthetic data, LLM embedding tables, network traffic, and hyperspectral images.

Sub-Quadratic Bisimulation Metrics via Approximate Nearest Neighbors: Coverage-Augmented Guarantees and Computable Two-Sided Certificates

arXiv:2608. 06762v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Bisimulation metrics quantify behavioral similarity in Markov decision processes, but their Wasserstein fixed-point operator updates every state pair and incurs quadratic pairwise work.
