AgriDefend: A $205 Offline Edge Device that Detects Crop Stress Before Visible Symptoms via Multimodal AI Fusion

AgriDefend is a $205 consumer‑grade edge device that fuses canopy imagery and soil probe data to detect crop stress before visible symptoms appear. It uses a MobileNetV2 CNN for image analysis, a Random Forest for soil trend features, and a logistic‑regression meta‑learner to produce a five‑class crop‑health prediction, all running on a Raspberry Pi 5 without cloud connectivity. In a greenhouse drought trial with wild radish, the fused model achieved 87 % accuracy and its soil signals predicted wilting about four days earlier than visual signs.

TinyCNN: A 193K-Parameter Network for On-Device Plant Disease Detection, with a Cross-Dataset Robustness Diagnosis

TinyCNN is a lightweight convolutional neural network with only 193,190 trainable parameters designed for on‑device plant disease classification. It achieves 98.88% test accuracy on the 38‑class PlantVillage benchmark, outperforming larger models while consuming far less energy, memory, and cost. The study also explores knowledge distillation to further compress the model and evaluates cross‑dataset robustness, finding a significant performance drop when moving from PlantVillage to PlantDoc due to background‑driven shortcut learning.

A100: A Hybrid Vision Foundation Model for Agricultural Plant Image Analysis

A100 is a hybrid CNN‑Transformer vision foundation model trained on 3 million unlabeled agricultural images using self‑supervised techniques (DINO, iBOT, KoLeo). It achieves superior crop classification (95.37 % with a frozen backbone) and phenotyping accuracy, and after fine‑tuning reaches 99.90 % on 32‑class crop identification and 99.02 % on 44‑class disease detection. With only 1 % of labeled data, A100 attains 98.01 % plant classification accuracy, outperforming existing baselines and other agricultural foundation models by significant margins.

AgroBench: A Reproducible Multimodal Benchmark for Weakly Supervised Crop Yield Learning from County Statistics and Pixel Observations

AgroBench is a reproducible benchmark that converts U.S. county-level crop yield statistics into weakly supervised pixel‑level crop time series. The data generation pipeline fuses USDA yield data with land cover masks, Sentinel‑2 and Sentinel‑1 imagery, climatic variables, and terrain information to produce multimodal sequences for individual crop pixels across the growing season. The benchmark includes over 13 million observations from 788,654 crop pixels, covering 5,107 county‑year combinations for five major U.S. crops from 2017 to 2024, and establishes a Leave‑One‑Year‑Out evaluation protocol with baseline machine learning results.

Embedding NDRE Trajectories into Contrastive Learning for Label-Free, Physiology-Aware Crop-Stress Staging and DSS Outputs

EigenCL is a contrastive learning framework that stages crop stress by embedding Sentinel‑2 NDRE trajectories, producing four physiologically coherent clusters—Healthy, Mild, Moderate, and Severe—without retraining across different states. Trained on 10,000 maize NDRE patches from Iowa in 2020 and validated on Nebraska data in 2023, EigenCL outperformed baselines such as K‑Means, SimCLR, and ProtoCLR, achieving high silhouette, DBI, and CHI scores. The resulting clusters align with maize growth stages, correlate strongly with soil moisture and yield anomalies, and provide interpretable outputs like heatmaps and scouting priorities for decision‑support systems.

ADA 2025: A Multimodal Dataset for Water-Deficit Stress Detection in Sugar Beets

ADA 2025 is a publicly released multimodal dataset exceeding 500 GB, featuring young sugar beet plants under healthy and water‑deficit conditions. It combines thermal, hyperspectral, RGB, and depth imagery with environmental metadata, relative water content, and leaf thickness as ground‑truth labels. The dataset addresses gaps in current AI/ML crop‑management research by providing diverse modalities, accurate metadata, and frequent data points for early stress detection.

An Input-Frugal Deep Learning Framework for Weather-Driven National Crop-Yield Forecasting: A Case Study of Brazilian Soybean

The paper introduces a lightweight deep learning framework that forecasts Brazilian soybean yields using only routine weather data and two simple static inputs (crop year and agro-environmental label). Across 20 seasons, transformer-based models achieved the highest accuracy, outperforming traditional ridge regression and a moving‑average baseline by nearly 48%. Ablation studies show that the static inputs and spatial expansion improve performance without adding complexity, and SHAP analysis highlights the importance of crop year and weather variables in driving yield variations.
