Beyond Accuracy: Community Perspectives on Machine Translation

The paper examines how four stakeholder groups—AI developers, professional translators, language learners, and language service providers—discuss machine translation on social media. Using a dataset of 79,286 posts from Reddit, Facebook, Bluesky, and Mastodon (2019‑2025), the authors find frequent disagreements and strong conflicts over translation quality, efficiency, and reliability. These conflicts arise because AI communities view the issues as technical, while non‑AI users prioritize quality nuances, time savings, trust, and broader social concerns.

Beyond Accuracy: Community Perspectives on Machine Translation

Despite remarkable progress in machine translation (MT), non-AI communities have raised growing concerns about MT systems, suggesting a noticeable gap between technical advancement and the needs of real-world users. For instance, while NLP researchers focus on benchmark performance, end users care about ethical concerns, trust, reliability, costs, and more.

Benchmarking Machine Translation on Chinese Social Media Texts

The paper introduces CSM-MTBench, a benchmark for evaluating machine translation on Chinese social media text. It addresses two main challenges: limited parallel data due to slang and stylistic nuances, and inadequate evaluation metrics that miss these informal features. The benchmark includes two expert-curated subsets—Fun Posts and Social Snippets—and proposes specialized evaluation methods for each, revealing significant differences among over 20 MT models in handling semantic and stylistic aspects.

Last Translation Benchmark

The paper introduces the Last Translation Benchmark (LTB), a live dataset of human-authored and peer‑reviewed examples—including texts, images, audio, and videos—that are designed to break current state‑of‑the‑art machine translation models. Each example is accompanied by handcrafted verification rules that specify concrete failure cases, providing a reliable and actionable evaluation method. The benchmark aims to overcome the limitations of existing automatic metrics and gold human evaluations, which often lack reproducibility, objectivity, and scalability.

Beyond "To whom it may concern": Tailoring Machine Translation to Audience and Intent

The paper investigates how machine translation can be tailored to specific audiences and intents, a capability enabled by large language models (LLMs). By systematically evaluating purpose-driven MT across 50 languages, 5 model sizes, and 8 text domains, the authors find that explicit instructions significantly improve translation adaptiveness, especially for informal domains, larger models, and higher-resource languages. They also show that traditional MT metrics often penalize adapted translations and that models can self-generate useful instructions from context, closing a large portion of the adaptiveness gap.

How LLMs Distort Our Written Language

Large language models (LLMs) are widely used to assist writing, but this study shows they alter both tone and meaning of human text. A user study found that heavy LLM use increased neutral essays by nearly 70% and made writers feel less creative and less in their voice. Even when prompted to make only grammar edits, LLMs changed the semantic content of essays and produced AI-generated scientific reviews that were less focused on clarity and significance and scored higher on average.

EviSI: An Evaluation Agent for Simultaneous Interpreting

EviSI is a large language model evaluation agent designed for simultaneous speech-to-speech translation. It adapts Multidimensional Quality Metrics to assess semantic fidelity and oral expression, using shared source evidence and deterministic scoring. In English‑to‑Chinese, EviSI achieves a mean Kendall agreement of 0.707 with human system rankings, outperforming baseline metrics, and shows positive concordance with COMET across five translation directions.
