From Symbolic to Geometric: Enabling Spatial Reasoning in Large Language Models

Recent large language models (LLMs) often appear to exhibit spatial reasoning ability; however, this capability is largely \emph{symbolic}, arising from pattern matching over spatial language rather than true \emph{geometric} reasoning over space. Because LLMs operate on discrete tokens, they lack native support for continuous spatial representations, explicit geometric computation, and structured spatial operators.

S-Space: Exploring Spatial Workspace in Multimodal Language Models

The paper introduces S‑Space, a linear subspace within multimodal language models where object‑token representations encode continuous spatial coordinates along horizontal, vertical, and distance axes. This subspace is intrinsic, readable under non‑spatial queries, and serves as an internal spatial workspace: perception maps object locations into it, reasoning transforms it for viewpoint changes, and verbal responses selectively access it. Diagnostic experiments using S‑Space reveal that while models can form spatial representations, they struggle with spatial transformations needed for reliable reasoning across viewpoint changes.

Geometry-Aware Test-Time Learning for Quantitative Spatial Reasoning

The paper introduces TTL‑SR, a geometry‑aware Test‑Time Learning framework designed to improve quantitative spatial reasoning in visual‑language models. By augmenting queries with geometrically coupled auxiliary prompts, filtering unreliable predictions, and updating models with a geometry‑aware multi‑objective loss on unlabeled test data, TTL‑SR adapts models to new domains without additional 3D supervision. Experiments show substantial accuracy gains on the Q‑Spatial‑ScanNet dataset for two state‑of‑the‑art VLMs.

Self-Evolving Neuro-Symbolic Skills for Tool-Augmented Spatial Reasoning

arXiv:2608. 07955v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Large vision-language models have achieved strong performance in multimodal reasoning, but they remain unreliable on fine-grained spatial tasks that demand both precise spatial perception and fine-grained geometric computation beyond end-to-end generation.

GeoReform: Reflective Formalization Evolution for Multimodal Geometry Problem Solving

GeoReform is a reflective formalization evolution framework designed to improve multimodal geometry problem solving by treating formalization as an optimizable policy rather than a fixed parser. It iteratively runs the reasoning pipeline, collects failures, diagnoses representation defects, and mutates the policy to better select, ground, group, and present geometric entities, relations, constraints, and targets. On the Geometry3K benchmark, GeoReform raises Qwen3VL-2B accuracy from 42.0% to 56.0%, demonstrating that effective formalization is crucial for enhancing multimodal geometry reasoning.

Disentangling 3D Modeling from Spatial Reasoning

In this work, we explore an alternative paradigm for spatial reasoning by explicitly disentangling 3D perception from reasoning, rather than jointly acquiring implicit 3D perception and reasoning through large-scale training. Our key observation is that modern perception models excel at estimating continuous 3D geometry, whereas large language models (LLMs) are particularly effective at compositional and symbolic reasoning.
