Reference-based diffusion models enable highly controllable image generation by leveraging elements from input images to guide prompt-driven synthesis. However, these models are computationally expensive in runtime, and their cost scales severely with the number of input references.

The paper introduces Bidirectional Reciprocal Learning (BRL), a parameter‑efficient fine‑tuning framework for referring image segmentation that operates on frozen vision foundation models. BRL employs two lightweight adapters—Reciprocal Attention Adapter (RAA) for token‑level cross‑modal attention and Reciprocal Gate Adapter (RGA) for channel‑level gating—to enable hierarchical, bidirectional information flow between vision and language. Experiments on RefCOCO, RefCOCO+, and RefCOCOg show that BRL outperforms existing methods while updating fewer than 0.5% of backbone parameters.

Subject-driven image personalization---generating new images that preserve the identity of one or several reference subjects in novel scenes---is a foundational capability for modern visual content creation. It is currently dominated by generalized methods that fine-tune a pretrained multimodal diffusion transformer (MMDiT) on hundreds of thousands to millions of paired \emph{(reference, composed-target)} examples, where each composed target is a synthesized image of the subject in a novel scene.

Large-scale text-to-image models are attractive backbones for dense prediction because RGB generation pretraining learns rich semantic, structural, and geometric priors. Existing generative and editing approaches reuse these priors by casting dense prediction as target generation: annotations such as depth, normals, alpha mattes, masks, and heatmaps are encoded into an RGB-trained VAE latent space and decoded back as image-like targets.

The paper investigates how attention sparsity behaves in autoregressive image generation, finding a distinct diagonal sparsity pattern due to spatial locality of visual tokens. It introduces a diagonal‑aware sparse attention mechanism that skips KV entries along the diagonal within a recent window, achieving up to 3.1× higher throughput and 1.19× lower latency with less than 2% quality loss compared to dense inference.

RefDiT is a new framework for reference-guided image generation that addresses the shortcomings of previous methods when handling complex scenes with multiple objects. It introduces local region guidance by decomposing a single identifier token into attribute-level signals, allowing the model to learn correspondences between tokens and specific regions of a reference image. The approach incorporates a low-rank adapter (LoRA) within a diffusion transformer (DiT) to adjust the inference prompt based on user-provided guidance context, thereby enabling more precise local attribute control.
