How Much Does the Hint Matter? Scope Conditions for Hindsight Self-Distillation in Financial Reasoning

The paper introduces Fin‑SD, a localized hindsight self‑distillation method for multi‑step financial reasoning that uses a student’s own failed trajectory to generate a short critique of the first incorrect step. By truncating the trajectory before the error, conditioning a frozen copy of the student on the correct prefix plus the critique, and distilling this hint‑conditioned teacher back into the student, the approach eliminates the need for an external teacher or full reference solution. Experiments on GPT‑OSS‑20B show that Fin‑SD achieves a 3.03‑percentage‑point accuracy gain on the FinanceReasoning Hard subset, matches full‑reference on‑policy self‑distillation while using 9.5 % fewer tokens, and does not degrade performance on MMLU‑Pro or a fourteen‑metric compliance audit.

A Privileged Teacher That Only Scores Cannot Search: Critique-Conditioned On-Policy Self-Distillation for Reasoning

The paper examines on‑policy self‑distillation, where a teacher scores a student’s rollout to provide dense token‑level credit. Experiments show that the raw scoring signals neither localize errors nor effectively penalize incorrect tokens, because locating errors is a search problem that the teacher is not explicitly asked to perform. Introducing a critique‑conditioned approach—first generating a critique of the rollout and then conditioning the teacher on it—produces signals that accurately localize errors, correct erroneous spans, and guide the policy toward backtracking tokens, improving performance on math problems and in cold‑start GRPO settings.

Purified OPSD: On-Policy Self-Distillation Without Losing How to Think

arXiv:2607. 02234v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: On-policy self-distillation (OPSD) has emerged as a promising paradigm for improving LLM reasoning, where a privileged teacher with access to reference solutions provides token-level supervision on the student's own generated trajectories.

E$^2$-OPSD: Taming Entropy Overshoot in On-Policy Self-Distillation

E$^2$-OPSD tackles a failure mode in on‑policy self‑distillation where the student’s token entropy surpasses the teacher’s, a problem called entropy overshoot. The method replaces the teacher’s answer with a retrieved solved neighboring problem to provide transferable reasoning guidance and uses the student‑teacher entropy gap to adjust token corrections. These changes improve math reasoning scores by up to 4.3 points in mean@16 and yield out‑of‑domain gains of up to 4.9 points in mean@16 and 5.5 points in pass@8, all without extra forward passes or networks.

Masked Self-Distillation: Internalizing the Chain-of-Thought in Language Models

The paper introduces masked self‑distillation, a post‑training framework that trains a language model to internalize portions of its own intermediate reasoning traces. By varying the fraction of trace internalized, the authors demonstrate that models can achieve higher inference efficiency and improved task performance on math and graph‑coloring problems. Experiments on Qwen3‑4B and Qwen3‑8B show that the method generalizes well to in‑domain out‑of‑distribution cases without catastrophic forgetting, and that supervised fine‑tuning alone can reduce trace length at the expense of generalization.
