Where to Steer: Input-Dependent Layer Selection for Steering Improves LLM Alignment

The paper introduces Where to Steer (W2S), a framework that adaptively selects which layer of a large language model to intervene on based on the input. It argues that optimal steering layers vary across inputs and demonstrates that W2S outperforms fixed-layer steering methods on several LLMs and alignment tasks, both in‑distribution and out‑of‑distribution. The study highlights input‑dependent layer selection as a complementary design dimension to steering vector extraction.

When is Your LLM Steerable?

arXiv:2606. 11599v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Activation steering offers a lightweight approach to control language models' behavior at inference time, but whether it succeeds or fails heavily depends on the prompt, concept, model, and steering configuration.

Do LLMs Have Values? A Quantitative Analysis and Alignment Framework for Values in Large Language Models

The paper investigates whether large language models (LLMs) possess intrinsic value systems and how to quantify and align them. By projecting responses from 106 LLMs and 95,000 human survey profiles into a shared sociological space, the authors confirm that LLMs do have values, though these values form a concentrated, idealized core rather than mirroring human diversity. They introduce the Prior-Environment-Cognition (PEC) framework to mathematically define value expression and propose an adaptive Alignment Prescription that identifies minimal interventions—ranging from prompts to targeted parameter updates—to steer LLM values efficiently without harming general performance.
