FeatureLoop: Benchmarking Coding Agents under Evolving Requirements

Read the original on arXiv Machine Learning →

FeatureLoop is a benchmark that evaluates coding agents on 61 human‑reviewed tasks drawn from 34 repositories in five programming languages. Each task tracks a development goal through iterative feedback—adding or clarifying requirements and reporting failures—while cumulative executable checks monitor new behavior, repairs, and preservation of earlier functionality. In tests of 12 state‑of‑the‑art models, the best agent completed 72.1% of tasks with both feedback types, but only 15.4% of failures were recovered within two revisions, highlighting issues such as incomplete repairs, regressions, and token inefficiency.

FeatureArc: Benchmarking Coding Agents on Evolving Features

FeatureArc is a new benchmark that evaluates coding agents on the evolution of software features, requiring agents to extend a feature across multiple stages while preserving earlier functionality. The benchmark uses a pipeline that constructs tasks from real repository histories, validates fail‑to‑pass and pass‑to‑pass tests, and covers four programming languages. In tests on 73 tasks, agents performed well on the first stage (62.7% success) but dropped to 28.5% when the entire feature was evaluated, with inherited defects causing most failures.

Don't Blame the Large Language Model: How Agent Harness Evolution Shapes Coding Agent Quality

arXiv:2607. 03691v2 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: Coding agents, autonomous systems that use large language models (LLMs) to resolve software engineering tasks, rely on agent harness: a middleware layer in between a developer and a large language model that orchestrates system prompts, tool execution, context management, and iterative reasoning loops.
