Asynchrony Is Nearly Free for Evolution Strategies on Long-Horizon LLM Agentic Tasks

Read the original on arXiv AI →

The paper investigates how asynchronous updates affect Evolution Strategies (ES) when training large language model agents on long-horizon tasks. It introduces a bounded‑staleness asynchronous ES method and evaluates its performance on the WebShop benchmark, varying lag and stale fitness fractions, and conducting extreme‑staleness stress tests. Results show that natural asynchrony closely matches synchronous ES, with only minor degradation in evaluation accuracy even when all fitness measurements are stale.

ThunderSyncRL: Lossless Acceleration of Agentic Reinforcement Learning

ThunderSyncRL is a training framework that eliminates idle time in agentic reinforcement learning by starting gradient computation immediately once all necessary inputs are available, thereby avoiding policy staleness. It applies to group relative policy optimization (GRPO) by computing trajectory score gradients as soon as rewards arrive, and to on‑policy distillation (OPD) by updating gradients for completed agentic turns while tool calls execute. Experiments on SWE‑bench Verified and Terminal Bench 4.0 show that ThunderSyncRL matches synchronous training performance up to 1.9× faster and outperforms asynchronous training by up to 2.47 percentage points at a fixed budget.

Agentic ESOpt: Fine-Tuning Long-Horizon LLM Agents with Minimal GPU Requirements

Agentic ESOpt proposes using evolution strategies (ES) instead of reinforcement learning to fine‑tune large language‑model agents for long‑horizon tasks. ES offers model scalability, flexibility, and better long‑horizon credit assignment, enabling full‑parameter optimization with minimal GPU memory. The framework samples parameter perturbations, evaluates agents with rewards, and updates online, achieving notable performance gains on WebArena‑Lite and in test‑time prompt‑parameter co‑evolution.

LLMZero: Discovering Adaptive Training Strategies for RL Post-Training via LLM Agents

arXiv:2606. 18388v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: RL post-training strategies are dataset-dependent and reveal a recurring empirical pattern: capacity parameters accumulate monotonically across stages, while regularization parameters predominantly oscillate in response to shifting training dynamics.
