An Efficient Approach to Beetle Damage Detection of Banana Using Deep Learning

Read the original on arXiv Machine Learning →

The paper presents a lightweight YOLOv8n-based deep learning framework for detecting beetle damage on banana fruits by classifying visible surface conditions as healthy or unhealthy. Using a custom dataset of 2,473 images from Bangladesh, the model achieved 81.36% precision, 74.30% recall, and 77.67% F1-score on a test set, with a 5.96 MB checkpoint and 6.54 ms per image inference on an NVIDIA Tesla T4. The results demonstrate that YOLOv8n can serve as a compact baseline for instance-level banana surface inspection under the studied conditions.

A Dataset-Centric Benchmark of Deep Learning Methods for Grape Leaf Disease Classification and Detection

The paper introduces a dataset‑centric benchmark for deep learning approaches to grape leaf disease classification and detection. It evaluates publicly available datasets on disease categories, annotations, acquisition conditions, and class distributions, and tests representative models across image‑level classification, region‑level classification, and object detection. Results reveal high accuracy on controlled datasets but significant performance drops on heterogeneous, real‑world data, especially in cross‑dataset transfer and object detection tasks.

A100: A Hybrid Vision Foundation Model for Agricultural Plant Image Analysis

A100 is a hybrid CNN‑Transformer vision foundation model trained on 3 million unlabeled agricultural images using self‑supervised techniques (DINO, iBOT, KoLeo). It achieves superior crop classification (95.37 % with a frozen backbone) and phenotyping accuracy, and after fine‑tuning reaches 99.90 % on 32‑class crop identification and 99.02 % on 44‑class disease detection. With only 1 % of labeled data, A100 attains 98.01 % plant classification accuracy, outperforming existing baselines and other agricultural foundation models by significant margins.
