A Two-Stage Multi-Scale Attention-Based Network for Weakly Supervised Cataract Fundus Image Enhancement

Read the original on arXiv Computer Vision →

The paper introduces TSMSA-Net, a two‑stage multi‑scale attention‑based network designed for weakly supervised enhancement of cataract fundus images. It first synthesizes paired real‑like cataract images via domain transformation, then applies a multi‑scale attention stage to extract detailed features while minimizing artifacts. Experiments on Kaggle and ODIR‑5K datasets show that TSMSA‑Net surpasses current state‑of‑the‑art methods even without paired data and improves vessel segmentation and classification performance.

Explainable Convolutional Neural Networks for Retinal Fundus Classification and Cutting-Edge Segmentation Models for Retinal Blood Vessels from Fundus Images

The paper presents a two‑pipeline framework for retinal fundus analysis that combines four‑class disease classification with vessel segmentation. It fine‑tunes eight ImageNet‑pretrained CNNs on the FIVES dataset, applies five gradient‑based explanation methods to assess model interpretability, and benchmarks ten U‑Net variants—including transformer‑based and attention‑enhanced architectures—on the FIVES and DRIVE datasets. The best classification results come from ResNet101 (94.17% accuracy), while the strongest segmentation performance is achieved by Attention U‑Net with a ResNet101V2 backbone, improving DRIVE IoU from 60.80% to 64.83%.

Evaluating Fundus-Specific Foundation Models for Diabetic Macular Edema Detection

The study evaluates fundus-specific foundation models (FM) for detecting diabetic macular edema (DME) in retinal images. It compares two popular FM—RETFound and FLAIR—against a lightweight EfficientNet-B0 backbone across multiple datasets (IDRiD, MESSIDOR-2, and OCT-and-Eye-FundusImages). Results indicate that FM do not consistently outperform fine‑tuned CNNs; EfficientNet-B0 often matches or exceeds FM performance, with FLAIR being the most competitive FM.

CEM-TUDASR: Computationally efficient multi-modality transformer based unsupervised domain adaptive super-resolution approach

CEM‑TUDASR is a lightweight, unsupervised Transformer-based super‑resolution framework designed to enhance low‑resolution images from Wireless Capsule Endoscopy (WCE). It uses a domain‑adaptive degradation network to generate realistic WCE‑like low‑resolution images from high‑resolution conventional endoscopy data, enabling effective unpaired learning. The model incorporates Deep Attention Blocks and a Fusion Attention Block to capture both global context and fine local details, achieving superior performance on WCE datasets and demonstrating cross‑domain adaptability to retinal images, all while keeping the parameter count and computational load low.

CEM-TUDASR: Computationally efficient multi-modality transformer based unsupervised domain adaptive super-resolution approach

CEM‑TUDASR is a lightweight, unsupervised Transformer‑based super‑resolution framework designed for Wireless Capsule Endoscopy (WCE) images. It uses a domain‑adaptive degradation network to synthesize realistic low‑resolution WCE images from high‑resolution conventional endoscopy data, enabling unpaired training. The SR generator incorporates Deep Attention Blocks and a Fusion Attention Block to preserve both global context and fine local structures, achieving superior no‑reference quality metrics and improved restoration of mucosal textures, vascular patterns, and anatomical details while remaining computationally efficient.
