Why Struggle with Continuous Latents? Interpretable Discrete Latent Reasoning via Rendered Compression

The paper introduces Discrete Latent Reasoning (DLR), a method that transforms continuous latent states into explicit discrete tokens by rendering textual chains of thought into images, extracting visual features, and clustering them to build a discrete latent vocabulary. DLR enables standard autoregressive modeling over both natural language and latent tokens, supporting pretraining alignment, supervised fine-tuning, and reinforcement learning. Experiments on five reasoning benchmarks and two model series (Qwen3‑VL and LLaMA‑3) show that DLR outperforms prior latent reasoning baselines with up to 20× compression while preserving interpretable semantic structure.

From Chain-of-Thought to Loops: Non-Autoregressive Latent Reasoning via Looped Transformers

The paper introduces LLoCoT, a looped latent‑reasoning framework that replaces the traditional left‑to‑right generation of chain‑of‑thought tokens with iterative refinement of a compact latent workspace using a shared transformer. By jointly updating latent slots over a few iterations and sampling latent tokens in parallel, LLoCoT feeds these into an autoregressive decoder for answer generation. Experiments on HumanEval and MBPP show that LLoCoT matches or surpasses explicit‑CoT baselines while dramatically reducing reasoning latency and increasing throughput.

SLVR: Structured Latent Visual Reasoning via Human-like Reasoning Flows

SLVR (Structured Latent Visual Reasoning) is a training framework that blends explicit chain-of-thought with latent reasoning for multimodal large language models. It organizes reasoning into typed latent stages—planning, grounding, evidence selection, and integration—each supervised by corresponding signals such as plans, bounding boxes, visual evidence, and final rationales. Built on Qwen2.5‑VL‑7B, SLVR consistently improves performance on multimodal reasoning benchmarks, achieving significant gains on MMVP, BLINK Relation, V*, MathVista, and ChartQA.

MedLVR: Latent Visual Reasoning for Reliable Medical Visual Question Answering

arXiv:2604. 09757v2 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: Medical vision--language models (VLMs) have shown strong potential for medical visual question answering (VQA), yet their reasoning remains largely text-centric: images are encoded once as static context, and subsequent inference is dominated by language.

Penelope: Localized Latent Recurrence for Efficient Structured Reasoning

arXiv:2607. 25915v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Complex structured reasoning tasks often require additional computation, yet current language models obtain it mainly by increasing parameter scale or by serializing intermediate steps as chain-of-thought (CoT) tokens.

ReGuLaR: Relation-Grounded Latent Reasoning for Large Vision-Language Models

ReGuLaR introduces a relation‑grounded latent reasoning framework for large vision‑language models, explicitly anchoring latent states to key objects and their inter‑object relations. It employs a training‑time ReGFormer to focus reasoning on question‑relevant visual evidence, while inference proceeds without the ReGFormer. The authors also create the RGROUNDING‑351K dataset and demonstrate that ReGuLaR outperforms existing methods across diverse benchmarks, achieving state‑of‑the‑art results.

Latent Recurrent Thoughts: Recurrent Refinement of Proposed Latents for Reasoning with Frozen LLMs

Latent Recurrent Thoughts (LRT) proposes a method for reasoning with frozen large language models by operating in the model’s continuous representation space. A small auxiliary network generates initial latent vectors, which a tiny recurrent reasoner refines over multiple steps, decoupling computational depth from model size. Experiments on symbolic and natural‑language reasoning tasks show that LRT outperforms prior frozen‑decoder continuous‑space methods and chain‑of‑thought prompting while using far less inference compute.
