Self-supervised learning from large-scale video data has emerged as a dominant paradigm for visual representation learning. Since audio and visual streams naturally co-occur in video data, extending this success to jointly learn from both modalities is a natural next step, yet it remains challenging.

The paper introduces Modality Self-Play (MSP), a training framework that enables multimodal large language models to learn cross‑modal interactions without requiring paired non‑text data. MSP uses proxy‑mediated textual descriptions of unseen modalities as semantic bridges, allowing a model to generate and align these proxies with observed modalities. Experiments show that MSP achieves state‑of‑the‑art or competitive performance on several multimodal benchmarks and demonstrates effective zero‑shot modality composition through learned bridges and anchor‑supporting proxy descriptions.

Omnimodal language models (OLMs) enable unified audio-visual understanding, but processing long joint token sequences makes inference computationally prohibitive. While recent token compression methods attempt to alleviate this burden, compressing modalities in isolation often destroys the temporal cross-modal anchors necessary for coherent reasoning.
arXiv:2607. 03050v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Omni modal large language models (OmniLLMs) have attracted wide attention for their ability to jointly process audio and video, but they generate large token sequences under audio-visual inputs, leading to substantial inference cost.

ViSSFlow is a unified flow‑matching framework that jointly tackles Video‑to‑Sound (V2S) and Visual Text‑to‑Speech (VisualTTS) generation. It incorporates a Diffusion Transformer with a disentangled condition aggregation mechanism, using cross‑attention for semantic cues and self‑attention for dense visual information. The authors also introduce a feature‑level data synthesis strategy to compensate for limited joint training data, and demonstrate that a single model can be trained end‑to‑end without sacrificing performance on either task.

arXiv:2606. 00508v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: This study introduces an intriguing phenomenon in Video LLMs: rather than merely translating frames into textual embeddings, Video LLMs establish a continuous manifold, token interface, allowing visual tokens to operate as standalone entities within the architecture.
