Identifying promising scientific ideas remains an important challenge in research practice. Researchers commonly rely on small-group discussions or one-to-one interactions with a single large language model, yet these approaches often expose them to only a limited range of perspectives and directions.

DocuTeam is a mixed‑initiative multi‑agent discussion system that allows both users and agents to start and steer conversations around evolving documents. Agents monitor changes to the document and proactively initiate or redirect discussions, while users can shape the dialogue or adopt agent suggestions. In a within‑subjects study with 20 participants, DocuTeam produced outcomes that were rated as more novel, relevant, and specific compared to a baseline, without increasing cognitive load.

IdeaTaste is a benchmark that evaluates large language models (LLMs) on their ability to generate research proposals that align with what human researchers actually publish. The study compares proposals generated by six contemporary LLMs against real papers from four research areas, finding that LLMs achieve only about 26% of the citation matching and 18% of the idea matching of human communities. Even larger LLM populations and richer field contexts do not close this gap, indicating that LLMs struggle more with translating research directions into concrete approaches than with selecting the right topics.

DataSTORM is an LLM‑based agentic system designed to conduct deep research over large‑scale structured databases and internet sources. It applies principles of Exploratory Data Analysis and Data Storytelling to frame research as a thesis‑driven analytical process, iteratively generating hypotheses, performing quantitative reasoning, and crafting coherent narratives. Evaluations on InsightBench and a new ACLED‑based dataset show that DataSTORM surpasses existing systems, achieving significant improvements in insight‑level recall and summary‑level scores.
