Low-rank tensor structure of precipitation and its application to satellite-reference merging

Read the original on arXiv Machine Learning →

The study shows that daily precipitation over the contiguous United States can be represented as a low‑rank spatiotemporal tensor, and that preserving native spatial and temporal modes via CANDECOMP/PARAFAC factorization yields more accurate reconstructions than treating daily fields independently. Building on this, the authors developed TMerge, a tensor‑based framework that merges satellite precipitation with sparse reference observations through shared low‑rank factors. Applied to the IMERG Final Run product, TMerge raised correlation from 0.53 to 0.85 and cut root‑mean‑square error and mean absolute error by 48.2 % and 29.3 %, outperforming linear bias correction, quantile mapping, and neural networks across seasons, intensity regimes, and regions, especially in coastal areas.

Diffusion Precipitation Generation with Medium-range Weather Forecasting

The paper introduces a plug‑and‑play framework called Dynamics‑Precipitation Decoupling that employs a diffusion generator to convert non‑precipitation forecasts from a frozen weather model into observation‑aligned daily precipitation. The generator is conditioned on atmospheric states and satellite‑gauge precipitation estimates, using a multi‑scale recurrent encoder and cross‑attention to capture heterogeneous rainfall distributions and align daily accumulations with evolving atmospheric signals. Experiments on global and regional datasets, including a heavy‑rainfall case study in China, show that the method improves daily precipitation accuracy, event detection, and localized accumulation patterns compared to several baseline weather models and ensemble forecasts.

SwAIther-Precip: Lead-Time-Aware Bias Correction Enables Kilometer-Scale Downscaling of Global AI Precipitation Forecasts over Switzerland

arXiv:2605. 16163v2 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: Skillful medium-range precipitation forecasting at kilometer scale remains challenging over complex terrain because precipitation arises from multiscale nonlinear processes that global models cannot explicitly resolve at affordable cost.

CSU-PCAST: A Dual-Branch Transformer Framework for medium-range ensemble Precipitation Forecasting

arXiv:2510. 20769v2 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: Accurate medium-range precipitation forecasting is essential for hydrometeorological risk management but remains challenging for both numerical weather prediction (NWP) systems and data-driven models.
