Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) have substantially advanced chart understanding and reasoning, yet their performance remains highly uneven across chart types. While modern MLLMs perform well...
arXiv:2604. 02794v2 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Charts are ubiquitous in scientific and financial literature for presenting structured data.
arXiv:2510. 04514v3 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Recent multimodal LLMs have shown promise in chart-based visual question answering, but their performance declines sharply on unannotated charts-those requiring precise visual interpretation rather than relying on textual shortcuts.
RSIV-Harness is a framework that keeps language model weights fixed while recursively improving the surrounding harness based on failure traces, using a four-layer evaluation to ensure stability. It addresses challenges in open-domain conversational text-to-visualization, such as ambiguous user requests, data source discovery, and iterative chart refinement. The introduced ODAC-Vis benchmark evaluates these capabilities across 640 tasks, and experiments show significant gains in executability and chart structure after a single RSIV-Harness iteration.
Beacon is a new agentic visual reasoning model that improves multimodal large language models (MLLMs) by better deciding when to use tools and how to use them. It introduces two key concepts—Mode Adaptiveness, which ensures tools are invoked only when necessary, and Tool Effect, which measures the net benefit of tool use— and trains the model with supervised fine‑tuning and reinforcement learning that rewards necessity-aware decisions and expands capability through expert hints. Across 13 benchmarks, Beacon outperforms other open‑source models, achieving the highest average score and the largest net tool‑gain on diagnostic tests.
arXiv:2608. 02833v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Chart question answering (CQA) requires multimodal large language models (MLLMs) to integrate visual comprehension with logical reasoning, yet current models struggle with accurate visual grounding and coherent reasoning chains.
