arXiv:2509. 02522v3 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: Recent advances in Reinforcement Learning with Verifiable Rewards (RLVR) have empowered large language models (LLMs) to tackle challenging reasoning tasks such as mathematics and programming, however existing RLVR methods often suffer from sparse reward signals and unstable policy gradient updates inherent to RL-based approaches.

Composition‑RL is an offline data‑augmentation method that composes existing prompts before reinforcement learning to address the pass‑rate‑1 bottleneck in large‑language‑model training. By generating and verifying a composed dataset once from a fixed source pool, it avoids modifying the RL optimizer and improves reasoning performance across models ranging from 4B to 30B. A curriculum variant that gradually increases compositional depth further boosts performance, and the approach also facilitates cross‑domain RL by combining prompts from different domains.

The paper introduces MENTOR, a multi‑agent framework that provides on‑policy pedagogical intervention to address zero‑reward collapse in reinforcement learning from verifiable rewards. MENTOR diagnoses failures in real time and generates targeted prompts to guide the learning agent, integrating seamlessly with existing policy optimization pipelines such as GRPO. Experiments on math and code generation tasks show that MENTOR significantly reduces collapse, achieving up to 78.3% relative gains on Llama‑3.2‑3B‑Instruct.
