arXiv:2511. 20851v3 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: Feature selection remains difficult in modern high-dimensional settings, and established methods such as Boruta and Recursive Feature Elimination are either computationally costly or lack a statistically justified stopping criterion for their importance scores.

Data-DPO is a target model‑oriented supervised fine‑tuning data selection method that uses one‑step probing of the target model to generate pairwise data preferences, trains a lightweight reward model to capture these preferences, and then selects a training subset by combining target‑model preference, external quality scores, and marginal diversity. Experiments on Vision‑Flan and LLaVA‑CoT demonstrate that Data‑DPO consistently outperforms existing data selection baselines across multiple data budgets and even surpasses full data training performance.

Interpretable AI with Local Distillation proposes a method where a black‑box teacher model guides a regularized linear student model at each query point. The teacher defines locality by upweighting training observations with similar predicted outcomes and anchors the fit with its own prediction at the query point, treated as a pseudo‑observation. By adding Gaussian randomization and refitting, the approach identifies reliable features and stable subgroups, achieving near‑teacher accuracy while producing sparse, locally interpretable linear models.

SymboLLM-FE combines symbolic regression and large language models to automate feature engineering for tabular data. It first extracts mathematically expressive formulas that correlate strongly with the target, then refines them with LLMs to improve interpretability. Experiments on six real‑world datasets and four Kaggle competitions show that SymboLLM‑FE outperforms existing AutoFE methods while reducing the number of costly LLM calls.
