The paper investigates how new concepts can be integrated into unified multimodal models (UMMs) by separating generation and understanding objectives through a novel visual entity bound to a single task direction. Experiments show that the effectiveness of cross‑task usability depends on where the concept is injected into the shared computation, with a mid‑stack alignment objective achieving high concept acquisition with minimal loss to overall performance. The study highlights that unified weights alone are insufficient; the two directions must share a semantic format at the entry point for efficient concept integration.

Recent advances in multimodal generative models have enabled instruction-based image generation to move beyond semantic manipulation to knowledge-driven visual reasoning. However, these methods focus on explicit commonsense reasoning, shallow causal understanding, and direct knowledge recall, failing at knowledge-intensive generation.
The paper introduces Uni-SafeBench, a safety benchmark designed to evaluate the holistic safety of Unified Multimodal Large Models (UMLMs) across six safety categories and seven task types. It also presents Uni-Judger, a framework that separates contextual safety from intrinsic safety to enable rigorous assessment. Evaluations reveal that current unified models do not consistently maintain the safety alignment of their underlying language models, and open‑source UMLMs perform significantly worse on safety than specialized multimodal models, especially in generation tasks.

VISA (Visual Instruction Synthesis Agent) is an agentic framework that transforms multimodal instruction synthesis into a self‑evolving loop. Each cycle analyzes images to filter constraints, samples new constraint sets, generates candidate instructions, and verifies them using executable tools and large language model judges. Failed samples trigger diagnostic recovery, while accepted samples are evaluated against the target model to estimate difficulty, with all feedback written back to memory to adapt future rounds and provide reward signals for reinforcement learning.
