The paper introduces Prompt2Box, a method that embeds prompts into a box embedding space to capture both semantic similarity and specificity relations, addressing the limitation of traditional vector embeddings that conflate topical similarity with specificity. Using a trained encoder on existing and synthesized datasets, Prompt2Box achieves significant improvements, reducing specificity prediction error by 45% over a prompt-length baseline and identifying 13.5% more LLM weaknesses in hierarchical clustering compared to vector baselines. The authors also present a novel dimension‑reduction technique for visualizing and comparing box embeddings, and provide the code on GitHub.

CORE improves compositional reasoning in multimodal language models by distilling a cross‑attentive reranker’s fine‑grained judgments into the embedding model. It generates candidate lists across five compositional matching levels and trains with a Rank‑KL objective to replicate the reranker’s ranking. Experiments on COLA, SUGARCREPE++, and NEGBENCH show CORE‑RERANKER‑8B outperforms Jina‑Reranker by 10.7 points, while CORE‑EMBED‑8B achieves the best overall average among evaluated embeddings, with gains also transferring to the MCMR benchmark without harming COCO or Flickr30K retrieval.

The paper introduces the Generative Embedding Benchmark (GEB), which evaluates how much content from an embedding can be recovered by a decoder that only has access to the frozen embedding and a question, without the original image or intermediate features. GEB uses a curated visual‑question‑answering dataset with 1,800 development and 900 test items covering natural images, scene text, and visual documents. Experiments on seven public embedding models show that visual‑only scores range from 28.25 to 33.21, while joint image‑question encoding boosts scores up to 65.56, revealing that generative readout uncovers information bottlenecks not captured by traditional separability‑based benchmarks.

UMER is a Unified Multimodal Embedding and Ranking framework that combines contrastive embeddings with Pair‑Aware Discriminative Reasoning to improve universal multimodal retrieval. It replaces item‑wise reflection with pair‑wise comparison of query–candidate pairs, enabling explicit identification of matching and discrepancy evidence. A mutual distillation strategy transfers reliable pairwise preferences between the embedding and ranking components, and UMER achieves state‑of‑the‑art performance on the MMEB‑V2 benchmark while supporting budget‑adjustable inference.
